High-temperature ultrasonic thickness monitoring for pipe thinning in a flow-accelerated corrosion proof test facility

چکیده
In order to monitor the pipe thinning caused by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) that occurs in coolant piping systems, a shear horizontal ultrasonic pitch-catch waveguide technique was developed for accurate pipe wall thickness monitoring. A clamping device for dry coupling contact between the end of the waveguide and pipe surface was designed and fabricated. A computer program for multichannel on-line monitoring of the pipe thickness at high temperature was also developed. Both a fourchannel buffer rod pulse-echo type and a shear horizontal ultrasonic waveguide type for hightemperature thickness monitoring system were successfully installed to the test section of the FAC proof test facility. The overall measurement error can be estimated as ± 10 mm during a cycle from room temperature to 200 C. © 2017 Korean Nuclear Society, Published by Elsevier Korea LLC. thickness and corrosion/erosion rate. In this thesis, a combination of signal processing techniques are used to estimate the corrosion rate estimates based on MBE. Corrosion rate is estimated based on ultrasonic pipe wall thickness data is collected over a short period of time using MBE model. This technique is based on data collected from the speedometer applied for thinning and both indicate ...

Due to adverse environmental conditions corrosion can develop during the life cycle of industrial structures, e.g., offshore oil platforms, ships, and desalination plants. Both pitting corrosion and generalized corrosion leading to wall thickness loss can cause the degradation of the integrity and load bearing capacity of the structure. Structural health monitoring of corrosion damage in diffic...

INTRODUCTION During the last three years my interest in the use of ultrasonics for the detection of corrosion and the measurement of remaining wall thickness has been re-awakened. The method has been extensively used to verify and quantify Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) results. Discrepancies between ultrasonic and MFL results have usually been put down to "Another MFL false call." However, having...

number of NDE applications. To excite Lamb waves, Ultrasonic Lamb wave techniques are widely used in a mode conversion of bulk waves or photo acoustic excitation are often used. Both of these approaches suffer from the need for liquid couplant or ablation of materials to reach good signal to noise ratio. In this paper, we propose a novel technique that utilizes point source excitation and detec...

The outlet feeder pipe thinning in a PHWR (Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor) is caused by a high pressure steam flow inside the pipe, which is a well known degradation mechanism called a FAC (Flow Assisted Corrosion). In order to monitor the degradation, the thickness of the outlet bends close to the exit of the pressure tube should be measured and analyzed at every official overhaul. This paper...
